Sleeping in Cars

I seem to be developing a strange, highly localised, car related narcoleptic disease. Whereas I have no problem driving to Cornwall or back from Cambridge, as soon as I try to go shopping in Leominster or deliver Broad Sheep to Bishops Castle after a couple of miles I have to pull over and have a ZZZZZ. I think its must be sort of like my Guinness allergy. My body’s had so much of it, its decided not to co-operate any more and just shuts down all systems as soon as it notices I’m heading for Mortimers Cross (that’s the driving bit not the Guinness). The only cure is to go everywhere by bike and now I’m increasingly cycling obsessed, that suits me fine. My latest squeeze in the bike line is a rather rare, ridiculously low, American long wheelbase recumbent which makes me look like a nerdy Peter Fonda and elicits much ribald comment and hilarity among the Presteigne youth. In order to soothe my punctured pride I have taken to trawling the web for long wheelbase recumbent fellow travellers and have of course discovered a whole new world of looney cycle builders and their websites. Its no surprise to discover that the Americans are way ahead of the pack in the daft unrideable machine stakes but that’s not to say that Europe, especially Holland and Germany, have not got their fair share of geeks in sheds producing bizzare bits of machinery. I recommend you have a trawl yourself and you might find a site called www.bikerodnkustom.homestead.com/gallery is a good place to start. Anyway since I have your attention I will bore you with a brief selection of my favourites including high ones, low ones, strange homemade ones, recycled ones, smart unrideable American custom jobs, clever European bikes and plain daft ones!
